What's New? Our Update History
- 4 September 2008: Set up new category for Business and Finance magazines, and started it off with six 1930 issues of FORTUNE. Added six new 1884-1919 covers from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, and an interior photo indicating how the covers were constructed. All from Steve Kirch. Added the May, 1923 cover of FRUIT, GARDEN AND HOME, giving us a complete run of this title, which is now known as BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS.
- 2 September 2008: Added thirteen new 1905-1915 covers from the syndicated SUNDAY MAGAZINE, ten of them from John Squires. Added three 1918 issues of LESLIE'S WEEKLY, and three ads for Murad Cigarettes from their back covers; also, a 1918 McCALL'S MAGAZINE; all from Mariangela Buch.
- 27 August 2008: Added new Pipe Tobacco ad from Mariangela Buch, and a Magazine ad for Gernsback's 1922 titles from Steve Davis.
- 26 August 2008: Set up a new Ads category for Bicycles and Motorcycles, and started it off with eight 1890's Bicycle ads from eBay seller more-vintage-ads (processed for clarity in Photoshop). Set up new Ads sections for Automobile Tires, Parts and Accessories, and Studebaker Automobiles. Then added nine automobile-related ads from same. And four new Murad and Fatima Cigarette ads, from Mariangela Buch.
- 25 August 2008: Added a cover and eight advertisements from the June 1927 PEOPLE'S HOME JOURNAL, magazine donated by Thomas Howard. Added Advertisement sections for Chevrolet cars and trucks, Major Appliances in the household, Soups and Stews, and Ingredients for cooking with.
- 24 August 2008: Added new section of a Variety of Travel Magazines, beginning with an obscure title OCEAN WIRELESS NEWS. Added ads for a soft drinks, a typewriter, Gulf oil, and three magazines. Added a 1925 page from POPULAR RADIO describing how it incorporated WIRELESS AGE. All from Steve Davis.
- 23 August 2008: Added new and greatly improved images for a number of technical magazines, including THE EXPERIMENTER, PRACTICAL ELECTRICS, two RADIO-CRAFT, six RADIO NEWS, and two covers and a bit of publishing history for SCIENCE AND MECHANICS. Also, a new 1911 JUDGE cover. Also, three ads for radio/television products, including the first in a new Ads section for early Television. All from Michael Holley. Set up new weekly magazine section for the AMERICAN LEGION WEEKLY, and Ads section for personal care Soap; and added a 1917 AMERICAN WOMAN and a pipe tobacco ad, all from Mariangela Buch.
- 20 August 2008: Added yet another thirty-five new covers from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, from Steve Kirch. Set up new Advertisements categories for Household Items (laundry soap, draperies, that sort of thing) and Clothing and Fashions. Set up new Ads section for Women's Toiletries. Added eleven ads from 1912-1926.
- 19 August 2008: Added five new 1912-18 ads for Murad Cigarettes, from Mariangela Buch.
- 16 August 2008: Improved image for a 1919 ELECTRICAL EXPERIMENTER.
- 5 August 2008: Set up new ad section for Oil, Gas, and Lubricants, starting with a 1922 Gulf Oil ad from Steve Davis. Added 21 late SEXOLOGY covers, from an anonymous donor.
- 3 August 2008: Added new covers for AMERICAN MAGAZINE, DELINEATOR, HOLLAND'S, and LIBERTY. Added new ads for Candy and Treats, Soft Drinks, and Pens and Writing. Set up new title AMERICAN SUNDAY MONTHLY MAGAZINE. All from Mariangela Buch.
- 31 July 2008: Set up new Category for magazines about Art and Design (and Antiques), and began first section Artistic Magazines with an early Will H. Bradley cover for THE ECHO and an unsigned cover for FOUR O'CLOCK. Also added a new section for Literary Magazines, and cross-referenced FOUR O'CLOCK there as well. Added the first issue of LUCIFER'S LANTERN to the section of Political Magazines (though one could argue for Religious Magazines as well). Added the first issue of THE YELLOW KID to the AINSLEE'S MAGAZINE section, which is where it actually belongs; also put a copy in Early Humor Magazines, because that's where people will look for it. All of these sent us by Steven Lamazow.
- 29 July 2008: Added 39 new covers and ads, all from Mariangela Buch. For advertisements, set up a new Sections for loose Tobacco for Pipes and Rolling, for Bread and Baking, for Pens and Writing, and for Automobiles for Packard, for Electric Cars, and from a Variety of smaller manufacturers; five new ads for Soft Drinks; four new ads for Breakfast foods; five new ads for Candy and Treats; two new ads for Beer; one ad for Health Foods; and one ad for Dental Care products. For magazine cover images, seven issues of LESLIE'S WEEKLY, and one issue each of the LADIES' HOME JOURNAL, LIBERTY, SUCCESS, and the WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION.
- 23 July 2008: Added 27 new 1916-17 issues of SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, from Steve Kirch.
- 21 July 2008: Set up new title AMERICAN BOY in the Youth, Children, and Kids category. Added two 1930's COUNTRY GENTLEMAN issues, including the special package for the 100th Anniversary issue. Set up new Ads Categories for Toys and Games, and for Sports and Guns. Set up new Ads section for Dental Care products in the Personal Care category. Added ads for Radio Experimenters and Breakfast!. All from Steve Davis.
- 16 July 2008: Set up a new Category: News and Current Events Magazines, and started it off with three titles aimed at the African-American public; from Steven Lamazow.
- 15 July 2008: Set up new sections for Television Magazines (in the Movies, TV, and Radio category), Early Monthly Magazines, Early Women's Magazines, and a Variety of Romance Pulps. Added a new title to Rare Pulps, and a new title to A Variety of Spicy Pulps. Added greatly improved early television covers in Radio News, and Short Wave and Television Magazines by Gernsback. All of these were sent us by Steven Lamazow.
Added two new images to A Variety of Spicy Pulps and one to Variety of Crime, Mystery, and Detective Pulps, all three found and restored for us by Beau Collier.
- 11 July 2008: Set up Advertisements Category for Book and Magazine Ads, and began it with a Pulp Magazine Ad for SNAPPY STORIES. Set up Advertisements Section for Health Foods in the Food and Beverages Category, and began it with an ad for Malt-Nutrine. Added eleven early Soft Drink Ads, three Murad Cigarette Ads, and covers for JUDGE and GOOD HOUSEKEEPING. All the foregoing from Mariangela Buch. Set up Advertisements Category for Personal Care Items, and began it with a 1915 J. B. Williams ad for Men's Toiletries and Shaving, from Steve Kirch. Set up Advertisements Category for Pens and Office Supplies, and started it with four ads for mimeographs and duplicators in the Office Equipment section; set up section for the famous monthly CENTURY MAGAZINE; and started these off with material from the MagazineArt.org Archives.
- 9 July 2009: Added seven early issues of the syndicated SUNDAY MAGAZINE, from John D. Squires.

- 5 July 2008: Added three new titles that we will be beginning with examples sent in by Steve Kirch: LESLIE'S WEEKLY, NATURE, and the PACIFIC MONTHLY. Added another new title, with first examples from multiple sources: MODERN MECHANICS / MECHANIX. Added new Advertisements Categories for Automobile ads and Tobacco Products ads. Modified the Home Page to replace book listings with easier-to-use direct links to General and Pulp magazines, and Magazine Ads.
- 3 July 2008: Added 16 early covers from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, and two back-cover ads from the same magazine wherein the ad continues or references the front cover, all from Steve Kirch.
- 30 June 2008: Added ten new 1905-1915 covers from the syndicated SUNDAY MAGAZINE, from John Squires and a variety of eBay sellers. Added publishing history and profile page for the Canadian SF pulp magazine UNCANNY TALES.
- 29 June 2008: Added two new 1930's POPULAR SCIENCE from Steve Davis. Added 13 early covers from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, and three issues of MOTOR, from Steve Kirch.
- 26 June 2008: Added new title OPEN ROAD FOR BOYS, in the Youth, Children, and Kids' Magazines Category, and started it out with 17 beautiful 1930's covers from Steve Kirch. Added a 1902 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN Supplement issue from Steve Davis.
- 25 June 2008: Added the February 1930 RADIO-CRAFT cover, from a scan done for us by Hans Schantz. Added two new and five greatly improved 1930 issues of RADIO-CRAFT, from photos of the copyright set at the Library of Congress.
- 16 June 2008: Added two 1878 cover/title illustrations from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, a 1920 QST and a 1931 SCIENCE AND INVENTION, all from Steve Davis. Added a new advertisements Category, Radio, Television, Phonographs, and Recordings, and set up sections for Radio Sets, and for Radio Experimenters and Constructions; started them off with ads from RADIO NEWS, also from Steve Davis. - 11 June 2008: We've been offline for a few days after a serious disk crash. But we have a bunch of new covers lined up to put online, and many, many more to photoshop and upload.
- 4 June 2008: Added a short biographical/links article on artist Howard V. Brown, who did many of the covers for the technical and scientific magazines you'll find on this site.
- 3 June 2008: Added 12 more new SUNDAY MAGAZINE covers from John D. Squires.
- 30 May 2008: Added 21 new covers from the syndicated SUNDAY MAGAZINE supplements 1905-1910, with 17 of them scanned for us by John D. Squires and 4 from eBay sellers. And some more Food and Beverage Ads.
- 27 May 2008: Added some more ads! Back in the cover image Division, added some ancillary material—a postcard from 1909 announcing a delay in the production of the February issue of EVERYBODY'S MAGAZINE. From time to time we add interesting little backgrounders like this one, especially when they include illustration art of the period. We don't know why the issue was delayed. By the way, this is our first item from eBay seller millcliff. Added more improved replacement issues: a 1926 SCIENCE AND INVENTION, a 1922 QST and a RADIO NEWS from 1926, from scans by Steve Davis.
- 22 May 2008: Set up new Ads Division of the website, presenting advertisements with artistic design and layout from the period. The first Category to go online is Food and Beverages. Yum.
- 21 May 2008: Replaced 21 issues of RADIO NEWS from the 1920's with new images from detailed scans by Steve Davis.
- 13 May 2008: Added a YOUTH'S COMPANION and a GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, both from Mariangela Buch.

- 12 April 2008: We upgraded to the latest release of the Gallery2 software! A few technical glitches. About 2% of the images aren't coming up when you click the thumbnail; if this happens to you (you'll get a message that an error occurred), please send us e-mail telling which image(s) fail to show.

- 7 March 2008: Added a rare 1931 issue of TELEVISION NEWS, in the collection Short Wave and Television Magazines by Gernsback, and a 1938 POPULAR SCIENCE, from Brad Hardy. Added a 1925 RADIO AGE, from Steve Davis, and a 1925 RADIO BROADCAST, in the Variety Collection of Radio Magazines. Added a new 1931 SCIENCE AND MECHANICS, and greatly improved copies of a rare 1924 EXPERIMENTER, a 1943 RADIO-CRAFT, a 1928 RADIO LISTENER'S GUIDE, and six 1930 and 1938 covers from RADIO NEWS; all of these from Michael Holley.

- 21 February 2008: Modified Album layout to add a link tree to the left sidebar; now the viewer can go directly from one magazine album to any other album, in any Category. Wow! Added a 1927 FILM FUN that took Mark Forer 19 years to find. Added another 1912 McCALL'S MAGAZINE cover from Mariangela Buch. Added three early issues of LADIES' HOME JOURNAL from various eBay sellers. Added a nice W. T. Benda illustration from a 1922 issue of LIFE (the humor magazine).
- 19 February 2008: Added seven more early issues of QST, in low resolution, from a variety of eBay sellers. Added 1912 McCALL'S MAGAZINE and 1914 LADIES' HOME JOURNAL covers from Mariangela Buch. Set up COUNTRY GENTLEMAN in the Farm Magazines Category. All these new titles, and two new, later issues of WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION, are from scans made for us by Sharon Marek. For the Children's Category we begin with AMERICAN GIRL from Mariangela Buch. We added the extremely rare first two issues (1915) of FILM FUN, from Steve Lomazow. Four more issues of WOMAN'S HOME COMPANION. A rare 1897 issue of THE YELLOW BOOK, which became AINSLEE'S. Three incredibly Rare Pulps, namely issues of ARTIST'S AND MODEL STORIES, FIRE FIGHTERS, and HARLEM STORIES; also from Steve Lamazow. Moved the early issues of ARGOSY from the rare pulps section to its own section. New section in the House and Garden Category for standard model BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS. Last but not least, added a new section of rare and Early Humor magazines, starting with a bunch from Steve Lamazow.
