An early Temperance magazine. Thomas Dunn English satirized E. A. Poe in The Doom of the Drinkers, or Revel and Retribution, published serially in this magazine. Temperance became as much a political movement as a social movement, and it culminated in Prohibition, one of the more glaring failures of the American political and social system.
